ACE Inhibitors Linked to Birth Defects

September 20, 2010

On all drug package inserts, you will notice a list of associated risks which have been identified through studies that the scientists’ manufacturers had performed and/or through independent clinical trials in which patients used the drug to be monitored for the purpose of identifying health risks posed by the drug. Every drug has associated risks. Yet, sometimes the risks are not identities until after the drug reaches the market. So, patients taking drugs may not be informed about such risks. This is a time when a lawsuit can be filed against the manufacturer for failure to identify and properly disclose the risk of the injury to the patient.

In 2006, ACE inhibitors, commonly known as high blood pressure, heart failure, preventing kidney medications, were linked to birth defects. This comes 25 years after catopril (ACE inhibitor) had been placed on the market with an average of 42 million users annually (2.7 million of which were of child bearing age). According to IMS, a pharmaceutical information company, the total market for ACE inhibitors in 2009 was $3.8 billion in 2009 with over 150 million prescriptions filled annually.

The following is a partial list of ACE Inhibitors, including:

  • Capoten (captopril)
  • Vasotec (enalapril)
  • Prinivil, Zestril (lisinopril)
  • Lotensin (benazepril)
  • Monopril (fosinopril)
  • Altace (ramipril)
  • Accupril (quinapril)
  • Aceon (perindopril)
  • Mavik (trandolapril)

What You Should Know about Military Disability Compensation

September 12, 2010

You have the right to ask for help. Claims for disability can be filed at your local VA office, VA medical facility and online. You may also request the assistance of a private attorney who can help to ensure that your claim is filed properly. This particularly holds true should you disagree with the disability rating you receive from your physician or if you have received a denial for your claim. * Your disability rating relates to the amount that you would be awarded for your disability.

Meet Deadlines. As with all applications, there are deadlines. Do not miss any deadlines under any circumstances. One deadline you will not want to forget about is the appeal deadline. Should you appeal your disability rating, you must file your appeal (Notice of Disagreement) within a year following the denial or rating decision by the VA.

You can learn about deadlines from the above mentioned parties

Rest Assured that Increased Compensation is Possible. You may receive reconsideration for your denial and possibly increase your disability rating for a higher compensation rate should your condition become worse over time.  These conditions include, but are not limited to, Post Traumatic Stress and back pain.

Hire a Lawyer for Appeals. The appeals process can be complex. It is wise to omit any risk of inaccurate or incomplete information. For this reason, it is advised to visit a Veteran’s Disability Attorney who can prepare Veteran Disability paperwork, file appeals and attend Board of Veteran Appeals hearings with you.

Acne Treatment Linked to Serious Medical Conditions

September 9, 2010

Acne mat be treated through a variety of remedies. Commonly, the first method of treatment includes: extractions and/or antibiotic treatment. Laser therapy is one of the latest methods available to treat severe acne. When all else fails or an adjunct to treat is required, some physicians turned to Accutane (isotretinoin) until it was pulled from the U.S. market in 2009 due to life threatening injuries linked to the drug. By the same token, generic versions of Accutane are still available and this sparks a cause for alarm, including:

  • Claravis
  • Sotret®
  • Amnesteem®

In 2009, a study linked Accutane’s active ingredient (also used in the generics), known as  isotretinoin, to an increased risk of IBD which is a disease that comes in to primary life threatening forms called Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. IBD symptoms include abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, fever, weight loss, and bleeding.

In 2010, Health Canada issued a public health announcement associating isotretinoin with severe skin reactions, such as edema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, which often lead to hospitalization and disability. Many of the rare cases identified in Canada due to skin conditions resulted in death. These conditions may also be referred to as skin death in which skin sloughs off of the body to expose organs. Many of people with severe forms of these conditions must have their disease managed in the burn unit of a hospital. There is no cure for Steven’s Johnson syndrome.

MRI Gadolinium-based Contrast Dye Label Change Due to Life Threatening Risk

September 5, 2010

Nearly two years ago, the FDA received a high number of adverse events reports relating to Gadolinium-based (GADO) Contrast Dyes used in MRI testing. Adverse events reports are used to describe incidents in which a user of a drug is injured because of the ingredients in the product. In the case of GADO dye, a high number of users who had kidney dysfunction developed Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF).

On September 9, 2011, the FDA has announced a label change to denote the risk of NSF for users of the dye.  While it’s taken nearly two years for the label to be changed, the hope of the FDA is that people who need MRI’s will be better protected from harm with the new label denoting the risk of NSF on GADO dye products.

NSF is a life threatening, painful and debilitating disease that can slowly progress to death as skin sloughs off the body over time. This skin sloughing, is also known as skin death, much like a burn victim suffering from skin death following a serious burn.  GADO dye products that will have the new label include:

• Ablavar (gadofosveset trisodium)

• Eovist (gadoxetate disodium)

• Magnevist (gadopentetate dimeglumine)

• Multihance (gadobenate dimeglumine)

• Omniscan (gadodiamide),

• Optimark (gadoversetamide injection)

• Prohance (gadoteridol)

Radiologists, nephrologists, and dermatologists have been made aware of the new label change and the risks of NSF that is associated with GADO dye agents for certain users.  People using the agent are at greater risk for developing NSF if they suffer from acute kidney injury or chronic, severe kidney disease at the time they undergo the MRI.

These agents were developed to enhance imaging for physicians so that they may better diagnose medical conditions.
